Episode 1
“La Gentillesse des Étrangers”
Well, first things first…

Baby is back. Thank you world.
And secondly, yes I know this is the Book of Carol, whatever. And I happen to love Carol. But. This is still the Daryl Dixon show, right? So can we please have better balance next time, meaning WAY MORE DARYL!!!
I would have loved to see much more of him returning to the Nest, and how he’s processing not getting on the boat and the consequences of his decision. But we did at least get the gist of it, and we can elaborate on that in our imagination at least.
Still looking great (gotta love that sexy little scarf) and still sassy. All good.
Carol is still Carol too, a sheer badass and master manipulator and a complete mess inside… making up lies like this doesn’t come from a healthy place. I wasn’t keen on this first, I’d have preferred a slower build of friendship between Ash and Carol, bonding over the loss of their young children, and it would have been more believable that, if Carol had helped him move forward, he’d have returned the favour by taking her to France to search for her friend, and demonstrate moving forward this way. Instead, it was all too rushed, and you gotta suspend belief yet again, but there they are, flying to France, and it’s all based on a very painful lie.
I’ve read since that this season’s arc for Carol is coming to terms with her own unprocessed survivor’s guilt over losing Sophia. And I guess all the other kids in her care afterwards. So that might be interesting.
Not as interesting though as Daryl’s developing bond with Laurent and Isabelle, and apparently that will also be a major focus of the season. Yes please.
That’s all I’ve got to say at this point. Nothing groundbreaking or earthmoving in this episode for me, but lovely to have the show back. Look forward to what’s next.
Over to you, Mz Lori.

Zabel (Showrunner) goes on to hint at a blossoming bond between Daryl and Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), after the pair grew close in the first instalment.
"There are moments of friction, but there are obviously moments of mutual interest, and more than friendship that seems to be developing," Zabel confirms. "Norman and I talked about this, that we wanted to draw a mature, adult relationship between a man and a woman and see where it went. Let's just put these two characters, who are very different in very interesting, intriguing ways, force them together by the story facts, and then see what happens.
"What happened in season one was that you could see a connection forming, for sure," he says. "We didn't manufacture that but we left room for it. A lot of season two is about the development of that and where that relationship goes, and that little surrogate family of Isabelle, Daryl and Laurent."
https://www.gamesradar.com/entertainmen ... -a-couple/
That said, Reedus chafes a bit when asked about a possible Daryl and Isabelle romance. "I don't want to be so on the nose with the shipping and all that bulls---, which I hate. People like to couple people up. People like to say, 'Ooh, romance!' But it's bigger than that. It's bigger than just, 'Are they a couple or not? Will they be a couple? Will they kiss?' This is a guy who his entire young adult life has been running and fighting. That's all he's done. He's never had an opportunity to date or to go through those doors before. So wherever this ends up, just keep that in mind."
Yes, Norman, thank you for that. I’ve been keeping that in mind for the past ten years. But come on. Finally. Let’s see Daryl taking a refuge in a woman’s arm who loves him and he loves her back. And more than just friends. Let the man finally experience something different. I know what he’s saying, and I get it. His relationships with women on the show were always very deep, Carol, Michonne, Rosita, Maggie, Beth, Connie, Leah even, but anything that was going in a romantic direction was always nipped in the bud (Beth died, Connie disappeared) and the Leah thing (everyone wishes it never happened) basically happened offscreen and then disintegrated into nothing. So finally. There is another beautiful chance. A strong, beautiful woman, well matched to Daryl. Why not explore this a bit further than they ever ventured before? I’m not holding my breath. They’re hinting at it, teasing it, but I don’t trust they will deliver on this, until I see it! But we can live in hope, right?

Episode 2
“Moulin Rouge”
Well, well, well…
Delivering… Actually delivering? Wow. An actual kiss on screen? No, make that two kisses! Someone pinch me!!!
My heart stopped for a moment I swear. I was so conditioned (nearly a decade!) to expect nothing, that I really didn’t, and the kiss caught me completely off guard.
It was beautiful - and meaningful - and happened exactly when they had just verbalised a potential future together, so it made perfect sense to give in to the attraction at this point, that’s been building between them over these long weeks/months together.
I would have directed it differently* though - but hey. They should have read some DD fanfiction to know better how to do this properly, lol. But I’m just happy it finally happened.
*Norman was saying in the interview I’ve quoted above, that we shouldn’t expect Daryl to have game as he had no experience. Yet, he was moving in for that kiss like a pro. It’s really not how it should have happened. I’d have gotten them to embrace after Isabelle declared that she’d be going to America with Daryl, if the offer still stood. A hug would have been the most natural thing to seal this. A long embrace that would have first passed the acceptable time limit of it being “just” a hug, between friends, - changing tone, and as they were beginning to slowly and reluctantly move apart, they’d have looked at each other, faces very close, almost nose to nose, and then, after holding their breaths, both giving in to the desire to kiss at the same time. Now that would have been way better imo. But beggars can’t be choosers, and I’m gratefully accepting the kisses as they happened - a they can’t take this away now. And … what a gorgeous backdrop!
The episode otherwise was full of utterly unbelievable nonsense. Carol just popping overseas to find Daryl in France, this vast country, like he was merely a kid lost in Toys’r’Us. First Carol just happens to find a lovely chap with an aeroplane, convince him to go overseas, then land with him safely in France, and she’s immediately bumping into all the key players. Well of course she does. Eyes rolling out of their sockets.
And Daryl - master tracker extraordinaire - falling for the staged Laurent kidnap scene. Oh please. And Emile betraying his friends. The whole Greenland story - was Ash then actually been sexually assaulted whilst tied to his aeroplane? Seriously? Etc. Etc. Just ridiculous, really, all of it.
But.
I forgive it all for the gorgeous cinematography and the kiss! Good Lord, after 12 years, 12 YEARS!!!! they finally let Daryl be romantically involved with someone … and someone we actually like and care about? Whatever next?
But if so much as a hair is damaged on the head of Isabelle after this… I think I will lose all faith in the production team. I’d have rather they didn’t go there at all than presenting it and then destroying it. Keeping everything crossed.

I thought it was a solid episode and it felt so good welcoming it back. These 2nd seasons tend to simply move characters around and introduce new ones, but there were some fun Carol badass moments. And yes, the scar seems just a part of Daryl now. More of his journey to trace with your fingertips?Dee wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 6:08 amEpisode 1

I've the same mild complaint - it makes me uneasy when important emotional sinew is skipped over. My trust level goes down that they will fail the romantic relationship.

You know I have a shaky relationship with Carol but hold a fondness for her. It's those silly little mistakes a seasoned individual like Carol should not be making at this juncture that piss me off. She cannot be confused or naive as to how these walkers operate. Ash is a sweet character and I like the actor a lot. Are his days numbered or can he act his way into a solid spot on the show hopefully. Carol's arc - well, I imagine there are a few people who've not seen the original TWD so they should be informed. I'm saturated myself!Yet, I'm not annoyed at this point so that is a plus and I LOVE the show.
Not as interesting though as Daryl’s developing bond with Laurent and Isabelle, and apparently that will also be a major focus of the season. Yes please.

I didn't like what Norman said at all and felt it bordering on disrespect to his fans. I know he gets a LOT of silliness and even hurtful barbs from crazed fans, but come on. A kiss? A romantic relationship? It's a must and just what the hell is he afraid of. His fans have literally been STARVED of affection - and I don't mean the cute puppy kind dammit. Plus, a man Daryl's age isn't virginal to the extent of not knowing how to deliver a masterful kiss - surely he is skilled at some of this stuff. Goodness! Sorry for those of you who would like the chance to mentor and mold his mad skills. I like your "fan fiction" version of the kiss BTW! Was it caramel or sweet water? I think the caramel is yet to come (hopefully)!

Ha ha - I suppose this is where the comic book genre asks us to forgive these huge leaps. Plus, to try to meld in with a society so quickly without vetting who they are and what they stand for? Again, eye roll.
ARGGGGGHHH!!! No please!!! The two isolated women were quite interesting, but again their story was rushed and quite odd. They seemed faint echoes of the various tortured souls from TWD whose trajectory led them to be borderline insane. Or perhaps they were twisted little pretzels prior to the apocalypse. I was glad Carol tidily disposed of them. Am I becoming callous? I trend towards, "Nope - ya can't fix that." quicker now, having met these types previously. It was suspenseful and Carol saved the day but it was yet another rookie "day" she herself created and Ash suffered for it. This is my instinct with Carol - don't put Daryl in danger while trying to "save" him.
But.

Has it been 12 years? Holy-crapoly! (Are we completely disregarding Leah as a romance because she sucked and the storyline sucked? If so, I'm fine with that.![]()

100% with you, my friend of friends! I love-love Isabelle and she adds a very necessary depth to this show. She adds as much to the mix as France itself.

Good to read your thoughts, Lori! We are in agreement in most of our reactions, it seems. So glad you’re still on this journey with me, and that you’re actually enjoying it.
I think that’s it, he’s just been bombarded with shipping questions and demands for so long now, he’s just sick of it, and of course the impossible situation he’s in, that any romance his character will ever have will only please so many people, because there is still a huge fan base holding out for ‘Caryl’ - which neither you or I have ever seen, not even as a vague possibility.
But of course it’s a BIG DEAL, and it was high time they let Daryl explore a mature adult relationship of the romantic kind, and thankfully they’re doing a pretty good job of it this time.
Yet how fans treat this shipping thing varies a lot: many are rather superficial about it, not as emotionally invested as you and me, lol. A lot of fans just want to see Daryl get some action. We want him to be loved.
I’d say so too. This was sweet water.
So I’m quite well versed in Beth/Daryl fan fiction and the general consensus of these was that Daryl pre-show had minimal sexual experience, most of which was arranged by Merle, and Daryl basically performed the act just to get his brother off his back and teasing him relentlessly for his lack of interest in sex. I think this is a pretty accurate presumption, given the fact he was an abused child/adolescent who lost his mother very young, was dragged into a very shady world by his equally messed up brother, the only person who semi-cared for him. In this world he probably never saw any meaningful relationship modelled for him, and sex was nothing more than a quick fix tension reliever, and he was just uninterested in that, possibly even repelled by the intimacy required, and revealing his scars must have freaked him out to the extent that he probably never did. So the general consensus (with which I completely agree) is that Daryl is mostly asexual, but would develop physical attraction towards someone he falls in love with. We saw the stirrings of this with Beth and Connie.
The Leah thing was a complete disaster, because they shoved it down our throat in one episode, without us seeing it develop and flourish. Had they devoted a mini series to it or let it breathe, we might have gotten on board. But there was none of that and also it was presented at the time when most people were invested in Daryl finding love with Connie. So fuck that shit with Leah. I bet they all regretted it. Kind of takes something away from this current love story now. If they waited 10 years to put Daryl in a relationship with a woman, they shouldn’t have done that in such a rushed way with a woman no one cared about. They should have let it happen with Connie. That was a huge disappointment that they passed on that. But at least this time round they’ve built a connection properly and with a woman who we can all get behind.
So regarding Daryl’s game and sexual prowess - I think that his game is non-existing or in its stirrings a bit juvenile and awkward, and his sexual prowess is something to develop from virtual nothing, but like with most things, I’m expecting him to be a quick learner. Given his selfless nature no doubt he’d become a wonderful lover. So Isabelle might just become a very lucky woman. I hope she will.

Episode 3
L’Invisible
Edge of the seat episode for sure. Terrifying situations. Daryl as always a total badass when protecting people he loves. Of course in the middle of the season even his luck had to run out to set up the necessary crisis point, made even more poignant for Carol to reenter his world now, rather than when he was playing house and baseball with his new little family. Yet the real gems of the episode were the quiet moments:
Like Sylvie steeling herself to do whatever it takes to save Laurant. So sad to lose her from Daryl’s new family, I really enjoyed her character.
Then there were Genet and Carol’s spine tingling interactions. I’m looking forward to seeing more of these. Genet, this crazy woman, being actually right about the dangerousness of the religious fanaticism of the Union if Hope, whilst being so twisted and fanatical herself. Carol desperately trying to read her, and all the surreal situations she finds herself in. She will sure need to bring on her A game to get out of this one AND save Daryl, but of course she will.
Possibly my favourite moment though was Lorang’s little lecture on the beauty of devoting yourself to serve your community, the people you love… Lecturing Daryl, the epitome of selfless love and service.
And finally the prison scene between Isabelle and Daryl. Daryl telling Isabelle in his convoluted ways that he loved Isabelle, before she said the very words back to him.
So no, he didn’t leave her hanging, he kind of said it first. But as far as “I love you” goes, he only ever said those words once in his entire life, as far as we know, to Carol, in his goodbye. Which is why saying it back to Isabelle now was so very much laden with emotional difficulties for him. Well, hopefully he will get the chance to eventually say them to Isabelle. Because show, don’t you dare killing Isabelle. I’m already pissed that she’s been hurt.
But all in all, the best episode of the season for me.

Episode 5-6
I felt so disappointed with episode 4 killing off Isabelle that I almost lost all interest in the show. But I did watch the final two episodes this morning, as it’s still Daryl’s story, and I actually enjoyed most of it, even loved certain parts, like when he sang along with Laurent and choked up on the words… that was probably the most poignant and heartbreaking moment for me… at least a moment given to show Daryl grieving.
This is still a very good spinoff, and I’ll of course continue watching. I love Daryl, I like Carol, and I enjoy their history and their dynamic.
But, we have kind of seen it all before. Daryl the indestructible zombie slayer, the reluctant hero, the rough guy with the golden heart, a man of few words but all action, the protector, the surrogate father figure... The one thing we have never been allowed to see is how this guy, with his massive baggage of abuse and thwarted emotional and social development, would navigate a romantic relationship with a woman. We were shown him beginning to open up to it four times. And each time it got squashed. At this stage it’s just cruel. And quite frankly a waste of opportunity to explore a character further in a fresh situation we have not seen him before. Oh well. There is nothing we can do about it.
I liked that Ash took Laurent back to America. Of course Carol stayed with Daryl, duh. I really enjoyed Codron’s character development, an unexpected bonus. I hope he might still catch up with Daryl and Carol. I also liked Anna’s involvement in the last two episodes, a great final arc for a minor but interesting character. I also liked Fallou, but his budding little romance at the end was just rubbing salt in the wound of losing Isabelle. These minor side characters allowed love, whilst Daryl is forever denied.

I haven't watched yet but I read what you wrote Mz. A and this:
I feel your pain. A beautiful love story brings so much hope and strength into a story...
Will they continue this show with Daryl or was that it?
Made me pretty sad! I find it maddening when the show writers kill off major love interests leaving the hero alone and abandonned. That kind of cliche should be dead and buried but they can do whatever they want to the characters, unfortunaley. They betrayed us in the vampire diaries...I also liked Fallou, but his budding little romance at the end was just rubbing salt in the wound of losing Isabelle. So true, DF, so true. I’m used to it by now, and just roll my eyes.
Daryl’s story continues, they’re currently filming Season 3. Daryl and Carol are together now, trying to make their way back to America.
Besides killing off Isabelle and Daryl’s chance of ever finding love with a woman, this has been a pretty neat series so far. I enjoyed the first season more, but the show is still good enough to persevere with it. Even if you know the story now, it’s worth watching for the French characters and the beautiful cinematography.
The Rick/Michonne spin off was also brilliant.
