A slight obsession that is never satisfied. Every time I see an abandoned building, home, shack, etc., I want to explore it. But I often can't get inside; maybe next lifetime :039:

An article about the abandoned hospital at Ellis Island in New York, if you're interested...

I recently visited a little town called Hot Springs, South Dakota. At the top of a bluff, you can see the outline of this "castle", a former hospital turned nursing home & now empty. Built in the early 1900's. And no, I couldn't find a way to break in! :57:

A hospital complex of about 60 buildings in Beelitz-Heilstätten, Beelitz, Germany, built in 1898, occupied by Red Army forces in 1945, and used as a Soviet (later Russian) military hospital until 1995.

And this image-trippy! The tile is gorgeous, & I assume those creatures were spray-painted on by a graffiti artist??

Gosh there are some really beautiful buildings here - what a shame they're abandoned - or would that mean they lost their appeal for you NR?
I watched a programme on tours that go to Chernobyl - despite the still high levels of radioactivity. I thought that was just a little bit bonkers. Interesting thread NR.

Great thread indeed, NR.

I totally share your fascination. I can't help myself either with abandoned buildings. I climb through fences and peep through windows on tiptoes, I'd do anything possible to just to see the inside.

It's not just the architecture, is it? It's to do with that fact they are abandoned, with all their rich history. It's trying to see what transpires of the life that went on amongst those walls at it's hayday...

And then there is the morbid fascination with decay and finding beauty in it. Thinking about Rone's amazing pictures painted inside these abandoned buildings, capturing the spirit of the place.

Lovely thread. I think we can move it inside the Architecture Board! Is that ok?

Such beautiful buildings. That unknown place in your second post, the theatre in Chicago...

And the Lighthouse...Now isn't that just fascinating, how you can live in one, and how you'd go about furnishing it with custom-made stuff? I feel another Topic coming on, on Lighthouses! :57:

I completely agree on the Chernobyl tours. The pillars of radiation safety are time, distance and shielding; so, trotting a bunch of humans around?? Bonkers is right!
