Nights In White Satin brings back so many feelings for me. A bit of hauntingly sweet forlorn love sung here. (Confession: My sisters and I used to come up with stories at night in the dark when we were supposed to be sleeping - complete with assigned characters and music. Nights In White Satin played a prominent role! :57: My main male character was named Davey and he was a whole lot like someone some of us love...HRS Mr. Salvatore. Fun-ish fact? My girl character was Lori which isn't a stretch as it is my middle name!)

I love songs that are of a time and bring back so much!
Ah yes I agree - that's what I love about Desert Island discs too - the fact that the music has such strong associations with some moment in out past that we can never hear it without some of those feelings or memories chiming in our hearts - or stirring depths of our soul that were sleeping.

Somehow we 're right back in a space frozen in time.

This song has intense associations for me too; I was independent for the first time and after being at a Moody Blue concert I walked home as dawn was breaking (it was early June). The walk was through hedgerows and meadows - no roads involved here. There was blossom and fresh growth everywhere you looked, greeness that seemed to sing its very colour and the dawn chorus was in full voice. Everything was full of newness, of hope, of growth and the pure joy of YES.

I've thoroughly enjoyed all your descriptions above of memories and emotions evoked by this song. How wonderful this song connects you all.

"greenness that seemed to sing its very colour" and "the pure joy of YES"

I like these words so much :x

Oh it was such a perfect, perfect scene - and the song was like it was made for it! Nice gif to go with it above too, Mz K.

Looking up from underneath
Fractured moonlight on the sea
Reflections still look the same to me
As before I went under
And it's peaceful in the deep
'Cause either way you cannot breathe
No need to pray, no need to speak
Now I am under
Oh, and it's breaking over me
A thousand miles out to the sea bed
Found the place to rest my head
(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)
And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing over me
And the questions I have for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean deliver me
Though the pressure's hard to take
It's the only way I can escape
It seems a heavy choice to make
But now I am under, oh
And it's breaking over me
A thousand miles down to the sea bed
I found the place to rest my head
(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)
And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
(So cold and so sweet)
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
And the questions I have for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean deliver me
And it's over and I'm going under
But I'm not giving up
I'm just giving in
Oh, slipping underneath
So cold and so sweet
In the arms of the ocean, so sweet and so cold
And all this devotion, well, I never knew at all
And the questions I have for a sinner released
In the arms of the ocean deliver me
(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)
Deliver me
(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)
Never let me go, never let me go)
Deliver me
(Never let me go, never let me go)
Never let me go, never let me go)
Deliver me
Never let me go, never let me go
And it's over
I'm going under
But I'm not giving up
I'm just giving in
Ah, slipping underneath
Wooh, so cold, but so sweet

Well, for me this song is giving in to temptation, something that you really really want to do but you know it’s dangerous and could consume you, but you can no longer resist. Once the decision has been made to give in, it’s an amazing and overwhelming feeling, and you no longer cate about the consequences.

A perfect fit for this moment between Damon and Elena - describing most beautifully what Elena was feeling.

Yes! Thank you for sharing your thoughts Mz. A :x !

I thought of a similar interpretation and of the fear to give into such passionate love and fall for Damon!
The hypocrites around her including Stefan filled her mind with bad beliefs about Damon. But deep down she knew who really loved, supported and protected her no matter what. Damon proved time and again his unconditional love for her and never abandoned her whereas Stefan did so repeatedly and showed zero understanding and compassion when she was a young vampire having trouble keeping animal blood down.
She always knew that Damon was her true home. She went to Damon when she needed help or anything but at that time, she denied all that until her attraction and consuming love for him could no longer be resisted.
This song describes this with the overwhelming waves of the ocean, the drowning in this passionate love and finally giving in...

Very beautiful indeed!
